"I chose to volunteer at Portal de Belén daycare center as a college student seeking to promote women’s roles in development and their power to change an economy. I have since witnessed the huge necessity for quality childcare and its vital role in providing not only the basics of education, but also food, shelter and safety. For these reasons and more, I now volunteer at Portal de Belen also to build futures for children who have begun life at a disadvantage. I could never hope in two months to strengthen them as individuals in the same way that their teachers and helpers at Portal do all year; but what I can offer them is a friendly new face, an open heart, and two extra hands to help make their days a little easier. I am also an avenue through which their stories can be shared to people searching for a truly worthwhile cause.
Sponsoring children at Portal de Belen means not only bettering their nutrition and keeping them from the dangers of solitude in the home, it also means providing them with an education that can break the cycle of poverty. It is the hope of Director Rocío Recalde that one day every child at Portal de Belen will have a sponsor, and as a volunteer I am working diligently with her to achieve this goal. It is with kindness, creativity, word of mouth, and a little bit of finger-paint that a volunteer at Portal de Belen can truly make a difference in a child’s life, and I invite all to seize such a wonderful opportunity to do so."
