|ROSA | CAROL | JENNI |

Name: ROSA / Age: 16 / Grade: 8th
Institution: Colegio San Gabriel

Sponsor: Skaiste
Location: Lithuania
Sponsored since: August 2009

Rosa's economic situation forced her to find work at 15 as a housekeeper instead of attending high school. However, her employer recognized her academic potential and encouraged her to continue with school on a part-time basis.

Outcome: Rosa is now 16 and attending 7th grade on a part-time basis; she is attending an informal educational institution recognized by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education on Saturday afternoons. Under Lourdes’s supervision, Rosa is receiving academic reinforcement to complement her studies and/or compensate for any academic insufficiencies. Furthermore, Rosa's family and sponsor receive regular monthly progress reports Rosa is now more confident and her future looks brighter and full of possibilities then only a year ago.

Rosa's Statement: “This program has benefited me a lot. I want to thank the good people from far away who have helped me in everything since I started school.  I really want to thank “ La Licenciada” (Lourdes Castro) for helping me and doing so many things for me that my parents could not do themselves. I like learning and thinking that in the future, when I get older, I won’t just work or do the things that everybody does because I want to keep studying and get a career.” Rosa (15).

Name: CAROL / Age: 4 / Grade: Pre-school
Institution: Portal de Belén

Sponsor: Julia
Location: Switzerland
Sponsored since: March 2010

Carol is a little four year old girl full of charisma, wit, and spirit.   Unfortunately, her living conditions leave a lot to be desire of due to her family’s lack of financial resources.  She lives in a very poor area of town located in the northern part of Quito. Her surroundings are precarious and even dangerous because of the amount of poverty all around her.  Carol’s mother, Fany, has 2 other children and a new born baby to take care of.  If it wasn’t for Julia’s (Carol’s sponsor) financial contribution and good will, this intelligent little girl wouldn’t be able to attend pre-school nor properly develop the social, language, and motor skills expected for her age.

Outcome: Thanks to SOLEcuador’s Academic Sponsorship Program, Carol has successfully graduated from pre-school and is now ready to move onto the next level. The seed of hope has been planted in Carol's tender heart; this relieve aid is also allowing her mother to care for Carol's siblings more adequately.

Sponsor's Statement

Over the years I have known Lourdes, her commitment to community and social justice has been a defining characteristic.  When she first contacted me about the sponsorship program, I had no doubt that she would be able to make a huge difference in the lives of Ecuadorian children in need.  I appreciate that the program has a broad view in supporting children: the money I donate not only enables a girl to get an education she might otherwise be denied, but also helps to meet the most basic needs of her family.  Through Lourdes' hard work, my hope is that the cycle of poverty can be broken for one little girl and her family.

Jenni’s mother, Fernanda, is an 18 year old single-mother of two girls both under 4 years old.  She’s doesn’t have a high school diploma thus her financial income is extremely low. Due to her dire situation, Fernanda often works exceedingly physical and even high risk jobs such as construction and cement laying. Jenni, like most 3 year olds, is bright and possess a curious nature oblivious still of her difficult surroundings. Although poverty and scarcity is an everyday reality for her, Jenni remains tender and loving towards her mother and little sister.

Outcome: Thanks to SOLEcuador’s Academic Sponsorship Program, Jenni is attending daycare Monday thru Friday where she is developing her motor, social, and language skills. By continuing to attend El Portal de Belén with the help of her sponsor's financial pledge, we can expect to have Jenni enter Pre-school successfully a year from now.
