ROSA's STORY: Rosa's economic situation forced her to work as a housekeeper instead of attending High School.

Rosa moved to Quito to care for an unconventional elderly woman and her household. Within a few weeks after Rosa’s arrival, the young girl had already established herself as a smart and dependable care giver.

Through correlated contacts, Rosa eventually met Lourdes Castro, who recognized her potential and aspirations to continue attending school. Consequently, Lourdes turned to her extensive list of professional and personal contacts, here in Ecuador and abroad, to help Rosa Isabel gain academic access and permanence in an informal educational institution.

RESULTS: Rosa is now attending 7th Grade on Saturday afternoons, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Under Lourdes’s supervision, Rosa is receiving academic reinforcement to complement her studies and/or compensate for any academic insufficiencies. Furthermore, Lourdes regularly reports Rosa’s academic performance to her family and sponsor; she also maintains close contact with Rosa’s employer to ensure her availability to attend and remain in school.

ROSA's TESTIMONY

“This program has benefited me a lot. I want to thank the good people from far away who have helped me in everything since I started school.  I really want to thank “ La Licenciada” (Lourdes Castro) for helping me and doing so many things for me that my parents could not do themselves. I like learning and thinking that in the future, when I get older, I won’t just work or do the things that everybody does because I want to keep studying and get a career.”

BENEFITS: Some of the expenses covered by SOLEcuador’s Sponsorship Program are: registration fees, school supplies, medical certificates, uniform, transportation and meals, and other accessories for tutorials purposes. In Rosa’s particular case, she also needed an eye exam and eye glasses to enhance her academic and overall performance.

ROSA's NEW OUTLOOK: Rosa is more confident and her future looks brighter and full of possibilities then only 3 months ago. She enjoys all subjects but has a special interest in science and language. Encouraged by her employer, she is becoming a dedicated reader which complements her curious nature. She’s also happy to be around other young people who, like her, are enthusiastic about school despite the obstacles in their everyday lives.
