Academic Sponsorship Program

SPONSORSHIP

The mission: Helping young girls of low income families gain access and/or permanence in recognized alternative educational institutions in and around the metropolitan area of Quito, Ecuador.

Background: Many low income families living in impoverished areas of Ecuador regard the education of younger members of the household as less than an immediate priority. This disturbing tendency is more frequently found in girls who are discouraged from pursuing an education while their male siblings are more likely to continue onto some type of formal, informal, and/or vocational education.

In the summer of 2009, Lourdes Castro, SOLEcuador’s Academic Coordinator, began her personal initiative of finding sponsors for young girls living under such unfavourable conditions. Lourdes turned to her extensive list of professional and personal contacts in Ecuador and abroad with the objective to secure the necessary financial commitment for her project. It wasn't long before a first sponsor came forth and made a substantial difference in a young girl's life, as well as her family's.

Each sponsors is familiarized with his or her "goddaughter's" particular situation and receives regular monthly progress reports regarding his or her academic, personal, and social performance. Each sponsor also receive personal letters (depending on the age of the youth) and can even arrange a visit through SOLEcuador.

Statement by Lourdes Castro

SPONSORSHIP

“It’s certainly a challenge to simultaneously play the roles of advocate, administrator, and tutor in the life of a young person. However, nothing is as rewarding as witnessing the same youth become aware and excited about the possibility for a brighter future for herself and her family. I'm grateful to the sponsors for their pledges and donations, and everyone else involved in this project who in one way or another believed that our collective effort can really make a difference." Lourdes Castro.
